The BNHS’s Conservation Education Center (CEC) is situated on 33 acres BNHS
Nature Reserve at Goregoan. The CEC situated amidst of forests. He or she
willdesign and implementenvironmental education programmes and projects at
the site and off site as well. The job mainly involves conducting
environmental education programmes such as nature trails, nature camps,
audio-visual shows, workshops, education material development and so on. He
or she is given annual target for revenue generation which helps in
sustainability of CEC. Grant writing for new projects is then desired. He or
she is expected to have independent working style with concrete time-bound
deliverables.

The meeting: The Insect Parasitoid SIG has not met for several years, mostly because of competing activities like the BEPAR conferences and workshops which meant that people were already over-dosed. But with BEPAR now ending it is timely that the UK (and abroad) parasitoid community should reconvene. We are hoping to represent a sizeable fraction of UK parasitoid researchers, so if your research involves parasitoids, please come and tell us all about it. We are interested in virtually any topic related to parasitoids; popular subjects include taxonomy and systematics, physiology, behaviour, genetics, crop protection and biological control, ecology, conservation, and evolutionary biology. In the past these meetings have been a friendly and informal way to get your research known and to meet other like-minded researchers.

To register: We are anticipating that the meeting will last the whole day (roughly 10am to 5pm), and there will be a buffet lunch provided which will be included in the modest registration charge of £13, which also covers teas/coffees. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assistant Professor, 9-month tenure-track appointment focusing on honey bees and/or other pollinating insects, 80% research / 20% teaching.
For four decades, the Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University led research in honey bee genetics. At the forefront of these efforts was Dr. Walter Rothenbuhler, the preeminent honey bee geneticist in the country who made significant contributions to our understanding of honey bee biology and their importance to modern agriculture. Currently, 30% of Ohio crops depend on bees and other insects for pollination. The Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University wishes to reclaim the Rothenbuhler legacy and regain our ability to perform world-class research on pollinators. With the sequencing of the honey bee genome, we believe that molecular biology will make important contributions to understanding honey bee physiology and ecology, including their interactions with the pesticides, pathogens, and arthropod pests that impact the health of hives. Current methods in physiology, proteomics, metabolomics and structural and functional genomics—including recent! second-generation sequencing technologies—hold great promise for significant advances in biology and ecology of the insects that provide critical pollination services to support agricultural production. This position is central to addressing these vital issues and to fulfill the OARDC’s mission to enhance the well-being of the people of Ohio, the nation and world through research on food, agriculture, family and environment.
Research (80%): The successful applicant is expected to develop an internationally renowned research program focused on insect pollinators relevant to food production. Research areas include but are not limited to:

molecular biology and functional genomics;

neurophysiology, learning, and behavior;

health of honey bee and other pollinators including interactions with pathogens, arthropod pests and pesticides;

ecology of honey bees and other pollinator populations in agricultural and urban ecosystems;

pollinator services to economically important plants.
Teaching (20%): The successful applicant will contribute to innovative undergraduate and graduate level curricula in entomology and related disciplines. Additional responsibilities include graduate seminar courses and the advising of graduate students.

INTEGRATIVE PHYLOGENETIC/NICHE MODELING PH.D. POSITION
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZURICH

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The selected Ph.D. student will participate in a
broad collaborative project entitled “Effects of climate change on past,
recent, and future biodiversity of alpine/arctic plants: Integrative
evidence from phylogenies, population genetics, ecological niche modeling
and new insights for conservation”, funded by a ProDoc grant from the
Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) within the Zürich-Basel Plant
Science Center (PSC).
Recent improvements in our ability to reconstruct the history of
biodiversity through timed phylogenies, estimate changes in genetic
diversity, and predict the potential distribution of selected species
with ecological niche models (ENMs) now allow us to infer the evolution
of ecological preferences and distributional ranges at different temporal
scales, from the present, to the past and the future. The Ph.D. student
based at the University of Zürich will use a combination of phylogeny and
ENM to test (i) the model of allopolyploid speciation by secondary
contact in arctic/alpine plants; (ii) whether island colonization by
plants with specialized breeding systems is associated with a change of
reproductive strategy, ecological preferences, and genetic variation. The
biological model system used to address these questions is Primula
section Aleuritia, because it includes a range of ploidy levels and
phylogeny-based hypotheses of polyploid species origins are available
(see Guggisberg A., Mansion G., & Conti E. 2009. Disentangling reticulate
evolution in an arctic-alpine polyploid complex. Systematic Biology
58:55-73). The project stems from a direct collaboration between Elena
Conti (phylogeny-biogeography; University of Zurich) and Christoph Randin
(ecological niche modeling; University of Basel), with additional
expertise provided by Stephen Smith (National Evolutionary Synthesis
Center, USA) and Jérôme Goudet (University of Lausanne).

POSITION CHARACTERISTICS: We offer a highly cooperative and stimulating
working environment in motivated teams, interdisciplinary collaboration
with leading research institutions, and opportunities for publication in
high‐ranking scientific journals. Salary according to the Swiss
National Science Foundation (SNF) guidelines. Funding is available for 3

The Canadian Facility for Ecoinformatics Research (CFER) in Biology at University of Ottawa is seeking an outstanding Ph.D. candidate for a new research project linking macroecology and global change biology. Current research at CFER explores a broad range of questions at the interface of these disciplines with additional focus on endangered species conservation and ecological applications of remote sensing. CFER currently hosts 4 MSc and 2 PhD students, and 3 postdoctoral researchers. CFER research productivity is high and we are extremely well equipped (see http://www.macroecology.ca for details).

The student will join the Canada Global Change Transect (CGCT) project. The CGCT is an ambitious, national-scale, interdisciplinary project that seeks to: 1) directly observe the distribution of a large number of butterfly species through multiple regional transects to test whether species’ ranges are shifting predictably in response to observed environmental changes 2) test and calibrate model predictions of butterfly species’ ranges with transect observations to allow reliable predictions of future impacts of global change. Depending on the interest and quality of the applicant, the project offers considerable flexibility in designing a research program that investigates areas of personal interest within the overall framework of the project.

Applicants should have demonstrated excellence in ecology and conservation biology and be capable of advanced statistical analysis. Experience in spatial ecology, entomology, and in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) or geomatics software are assets. Proficiency in spoken and written English essential. Selection of a student will be based on academic achievements, reference letters and previous research experience. Students with their own scholarship support can expect additional support through CGCT and will be competitive for teaching assistanceships. Non-scholarship applicants will receive the standard uOttawa stipend: $18,500/year.

PhD position in "Movement/Pollination ecology" in Germany

A PhD position in "Movement/Pollination ecology" is available at the
Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F), Lab K. Böhning-Gaese, in
Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The successful applicant will investigate the determinants of bird
pollination and plant reproduction in South African heathlands. He/she
will examine how resource distributions shape bird movements and plant
reproduction, combining observational and experimental approaches. The
project is carried out in close collaboration with another PhD-student
(supervised by Frank Schurr, University of Potsdam, Germany) and aims at a
deeper understanding of spatial interactions between plants and animals.
The applicant should hold a master/diploma in Biology or a related field,
and needs to have expertise in conducting ecological field work and a
strong interest in statistical modelling, preferably with R. He/she is

JOB SUMMARY
To assist in the planning and execution of the conservation work undertaken by the Flora Conservation Department at Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden Hong Kong, focusing on the application of environmental and ecological statistics and GIS based methods. Your work will play a key role in helping to protect Hong Kong and South China’s natural environments. Staying one step ahead of the latest technology, you'll provide essential analytical and technical support to our regional and area teams, to solve challenging spatial problems that arise in our projects. We seek an exceptional individual with preferably a PhD and postdoctoral experience relevant to computational biology, including a degree in areas of biology, computer science, mathematics, and/or statistics with fundamental GIS and ecological and environmental modelling experience. Daily duties will include spatial image preparation and processing (e.g. rectification, resampling), digitisation, spatial data management using GIS, climate and vegetation modelling. Applicants must be enthusiastic and have excellent communication skills, as they will be an integral part of a small and dynamic team.

Major Responsibilities

• To assist in the execution of habitat and species conservation projects, through the planning and application of experimental computational techniques
• To technically support and if necessary to participate in field work to survey habitats and species distributions
• To help maintain and review inventory systems including the management of the KFBG database
• Plan and manage land and vegetation surveys using up to date GIS and remote sensing technologies
• Model vegetation, potential species distributions and habitats using climate envelopes
• Run predictive analysis on the influence of climate change on vegetation, habitat and species distributions
• Produce vegetation, habitat and species distribution maps
• To handle general administrative duties and daily operations towards the development of capacity within the Flora Conservation Department
• As assigned from time to time

Requirements

• You should be passionate about biodiversity and its conservation
• Preferably PhD degree holder with postdoctoral experience in one of the following disciplines: computational biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics
• Experience in statistical computing using R
• Experience in GIS analysis using ArcGIS software suite (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox) and/or GRASS GIS
• Experience in different remote sensing satellite and air-photo methodologies and techniques using adequate software suites (ENVI, ERDAS, Definiens etc.)
• Experience in spatial data management using preferably Open Source technologies
• Naturally, you'll have superb IT skills

The following attributes are desirable, but non-essential:

• Previous programming or GIS customization experience, including writing customized R packages using the R/S and/or C/C++ or Fortran languages
• Field work experience using GPS technology preferable Trimble or Topcon
